5 great tips to create an allergy-proof home

October 5, 2017

Is your throat itchy? Do you sneeze a lot? Does your head feel ‘stuffy’ lately? You probably have an allergy.

The common misconception, though, is that allergies are triggered because of pollution outside the house when actually there are a lot more factors happening indoors that may be triggering an allergy attack.

There are a lot of reasons why a person’s allergy might be triggered. Common allergens which affect most people are pet dander, dust mites, pollens, and mold.

Allergies can greatly affect someone’s life. Some people who have serious allergy conditions can be easily triggered by the smallest amount of dust. Most of the time, this condition is considered usual and common but it can sometimes lead to serious life-threatening situations. Some cases also report inability to breathe, swelling of the airway, and even sudden and severe drop in blood pressure.

Below are some measures you can take to make an allergy-proof place.

  1. Dust properly

Dusting is a great way to get rid of the allergens sitting on your bed, couch, table, etc. However, you must also know that dusting can also send the particles into the air, which is worse than undisturbed dust.

It is better to use a damp cloth and wipe it over the surface of furniture and things. It is also recommended that you wear a mask while dusting to avoid inhaling it.

  1. Clean your AC

Air conditioning units can also act as air filters. However, over time these units also trap specks of dust and other allergens inside them. These substances will then be spewed out and end up inside your home.

It is best to clean the air filters once a month and have the unit checked by a technician at least twice a year.

  1. Practice better pet grooming

It is not just your pet’s fur that you should be worried about when it comes to allergies. The protein found in your pet’s dander (dead skin flakes), saliva, and fur are also contributing factors to allergic attacks.

One thing to do to reduce your pet’s dander is by regularly vacuuming the floor and rugs. It is also good practice to wash them off as often as possible.

You can also assign areas in your home which should be pet-free like your bedroom and the furniture.

  1. Reduce stuffed toys

As hard as it may be for your child to let go, her furry friends have to be minimized. These stuffed toys are literal dust traps and your child may be closer to harm when playing with them.

It is also best to wash the toys every so often before letting your child play with them again.

  1. Put to doormats in the entryway

In a condo-living lifestyle, it is not common practice to ask your guests to remove their shoes upon entering your home. This might be troublesome if you are trying to keep your condo allergy-free.

One great tip is to use two doormats, one outside the door and another one inside. This method can help keep minimize allergens entering your home. You can also buy some indoor slippers which you (and even your guest) can use while inside the house.

Allergens and irritants will always be present, of course (unless you live in a vacuum-sealed house). But taking these extra steps can help minimize the allergic substances in your home.
